Troy Poeschl

Artist Philosophy

Many artists are inspired by their natural surrounding, but few by nature itself, how it is formed, its growth, its stress, its life, its very being. Troy Poeschl looks at all these aspects in the creation of his art work, developing sculpture that looks at every detail of the materials evolution for inspiration.

Artist Statement

“I believe in letting each sculpture guide and inspire the viewer – conveying its own story that has taken decades to develop with each layer and year of growth. Juxtaposed against the wood are its supports, created of man made materials giving color and texture. One must look deeply to see each grain, which has guided each sculpture, creating a unique work.

This response to nature captures its spontaneity that has been molded by the environment. These elements both natural and human related can be seen in the character of the wood that shows exposure of fire, water and its lifetime stresses that create its identity. ”

Artist Background

Troy Poeschl grew up in the city of Orange in Southern California. Studying many types of media, Troy graduated in 1989 from California State University in Long Beach with a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts and a Minor in Industrial Arts. He has worked as a designer and fabricator on coffee roasters for Dietrich’s Coffee and motor racing components before becoming a full-time artist. For the past six years Troy has exhibited at the Sawdust Art Festival and for four years at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. His work has been on exhibit at the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, San Diego and the Irvine Fine Art Center’s Annual Juried Exhibition. In the “2006: The Art Year in Review” article, Roberta Carasso, of the Laguna News Post, wrote “It is important to mention that Troy Poeschl showed some of the most original sculpture at the Diane DeBilzan Gallery.”
